Its role is to disregard any obligation towards its social context.

Art is the freedom to create something outside of the usual constraints of everyday life. We created art for ourselves and as such there is no point in restricting it to a role we feel it should play or a purpose we feel it must serve.

/ic/ and /his/ are shit.

For the artist - the role is to do what art fundamentally has been doing since the dawn of mankind, or to make money.
For the rich - to look sophisticated and to make money.
For the common people - to make fun of the modern art and to pretend to appreciate the classical.
So yeah, few people really care.

A movement in the 19th century that was repulsed by capitalism, formal religion, boring work, etc. Look up Brook Farm if you want to get a better grasp of what it is/was.
