What does /lit/ think about Croatian literature and some famous Croat writers like Schonoa, Gundulic, Kumcic and many more.
>>
>Schonoa
No.

Šoljan's Kratki Izlet was pretty good. Not Croatian, but Andrić is GOAT, if a bit dry
>>
I bought the return of filip latinovicz as a gift for a friend who's travelling to Europe soon, and visiting her far away relatives because I wanted to give her both a book and something representative of the culture over there. Did I fuck up? Its worth mentioning that not many Croatian books can be bought in Spanish in South America, this was a pretty easy one.

Any other recs for the future?
>>
No you didnt sir. There are also many more great books in the Croatian literature like Kumcic' Zrinsko-Frankopan Conspiracy, Novaks The Last Stipancici and so much more. In my opinion in the eyes of other more cultuely developed conturies like Francesco or Russia they see Croatian literature as weak and poor
>>
Croat here
>Schonoa
Šenoa*
He was a bit too close to pulp, though he has some nice moments. He's an important rather than a good writer (started realism in this country).
Gundulić is good. His religiousness and surprisingly conservative views on social stratification might be off-putting to a modern reader, however.
Kumičić I didn't have to read in school, thanks to my prof who implied that he isn't that good. Basically he's continuing the artistically dubious tradition of Šenoa, but was very popular back in the 19th century.

You might have fucked up. "Filip Latinovicz" is stylistically quite similar to Proust, but is depressed as fuck, nihilstic, misanthropic, much is written about the degenerate and fallen aristocracy and the most fun scene is a philosophical debate on the purpose on art.
I love the book, Krleža is possibly the most highly regarded croatian writer ever, but if your friend isn't into such stuff... you fucked up.

If you want more croatian stuff, I recommend Ivan Goran Kovačić - Jama ("The Pit" in english), a relatively short narrative poem describing a war crime. It's possibly the darkest and most brutal piece of literature I've ever read.
Ranko Marinković's "Kiklop" (The Cyclops) is a bit lighter. It's still not exactly overflowing with joy, it follows this guy during the second world war in Zagreb, waiting to be recruited and sent to war. It's often compared to Ulysses, but it's easier to read.
Andrić is very good as well, but nobody really agrees on his nationality.

Well I hope she likes it, I'll borrow it afterwards. I was particularly interested in lit depicting social and historical aspects of the region, and thought TROFL would suite this requisite, as I read the synopsis and it talked about a man that ended roaming throughout his country. I guess I was wrong but whatever.
Thanks for The Cyclops, Im gonna look into it, hope I can get it in Spanish

Well, Krleža does give you a picture of the society, but it's a pretty bleak one. The realists (Novak, J. Kozarac, A. Kovačić, E. Kumičić) might be a better choice if you want history and society. Ivan Mažuranić and Marko Marulić also wrote about the conflict with the Ottomans, which was a pretty big deal back then.
These generally aren't the cream of the crop, however, and it's unlikely that you'll find them translated.
If you can't find Cyclops in Spanish, there's a recent English translation available.

Had no luck so far, but I think the Spanish translation exists, and the problem is the availability in my country. Books and delivery cost almost the same, it's ridiculous.
