Not a /lit/ guy or particularly smart, but I read Swann's Way and there were a few passages that perfectly described this feeling. Made it worthwhile to read through the rest of the stuff that I didn't really get.
But then for a lot of books it feels like there are maybe 2 or 3 sentences that stick with me with me, even if I don't remember anything else about the book.

Moncrieff's translation is considered definitive and most modern editions use that or are a revision of it. Penguin came out with a new translation in 2004, but every volume is translated by a different person, so that's not recommended even though I've heard that individually the translations are pretty good.
