Hey /lit/ I'm thinking about learning chinese for the literature/films.
Is it worth it?
What does /lit/ think of chinese lit?
I have a professor who has been trying to learn it for like a decade and she says she still feels like "an outsider looking in" with regard to the language.
I think you can get up to the point of basic communication pretty fast, but ever really enjoying the culture is difficult. Let alone truly classic lit.
There's also this:

And some anon here once posted a gigantic 3-post extragavanza about why learning Chinese is an extremely horrible idea and waste of time.

Unless you're prepared to spend literally the rest of your life learning it, probably not worth it.
It's basically impossible for a foreigner to become properly fluent.

I find it a truly fun language to learn. I recommend it, but it's true that it's pretty much a lifetime thing.
