I think you could do it, lad. It's not so onerous. Give it some time and give it some effort, and concentrate only on being to read and write it, you'll get there with consistent effort in two years.

I just dont think its worth years of effort just to be able to read a couple great authors in the original language, learning ancient greek/latin would probably unlock more content anyway

All you're showing us is that your original post was insincere and that you don't actually care enough about reading the mentioned works in their native languages. What's the point in even complaining if you don't really care?

I read Die Leiden des jungen Werthers and it was alright, nothing that blew my mind or anything. I will read Faust at some point, I have to finish reading the Bible first and after that I would like to read something shorter and lighter until I start a more complex book again.

Don't bother. The only reason Anglos think he was anything but a second rate Stirner is because they don't know German.

Werther is the book spent his entire maturity trying to distance himself from. Faust is very little like it and is better in every way.
>>
>>9270501
He isn't. That's why Neetshit got away with ripping off literally every worthwhile part of his """"philosophy""""" from Stirner.

My friends, pls help
>>
>>9270503
Well to be fair, part of the reason why he wanted to distance himself was that a lot of people didn't get that you're supposed to realise Werther and his hyper-sensitivity is a joke. This is not to say that you shouldn't relate to Werther (God knows I do), but he's so over the top and his suicide is so obviously botched that you just cannot take him seriously at the end. On top of that it's also partly a critique of Goethe's contemporary class society with all its barriers and hypocrisies rooted in pre-Bürgertum times, which also went over a lot of people's heads.
In any case I hope >>9270018 read the first edition because the second one is pretty neutered in comparison.
>>
>>9271585

>like u guyz just don't get it akshually werther was just irony lol it wuz all a joke

Goethe almost killed himself in the same circumstances, the book is largely autobiographic.

>it's a critique of class barriers

Goethe was literally a courtier at one of the most refined courts in Europe. Speaking of barriers he was also in favor of locked ghettos for Jews. You literally don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

Don't bother dude. I am German and I can tell you, you will most likely never be at a level where you can read and grasp these authors' writings, most Germans living nowadays could not wrap their minds around it if their lives depended on it. German is a dying language anyway.
If you're not really into the language for more than a few writers you will never pull through with it anyway.

I am glad that English is such an easily accessible language, I have acquired a pretty high level considering the fact that I never technically learned it, I just adapted to my environment. It's a shame that there is only one Internet in a way.
>>
>>9271811
I disagree. I was at an german school abroad where we had many non german speakers and they ended up learning better German than the germans in the class even if they still had an accent.

It is jsut about how much you are willing to dedicate yourself to learning the language.

If you only go to your bookstore and get a Rosetta stone and a workbook, then you won't get anywhere.
>>
>>9271912
>If you only go to your bookstore and get a Rosetta stone and a workbook, then you won't get anywhere.
So, how do I get anywhere.

Take private lessons, study the grammatic and syntax extensively, translate a lot and talk/write to native speakers (there are lots of sites that offer this service for free).
>>
>>9271811
>you will most likely never be at a level where you can read and grasp these authors' writings, most Germans living nowadays could not wrap their minds around it if their lives depended on it.

Just like how English natives can't understand Shakespeare yet I as an ESL can perfectly comprehend every sentence? Yeah, whatever, let the retards be retards but that doesn't mean people can't learn a language.
>>
>>9271932

Like what, I don't want to wade through a hundred ones asking for a credit card at the end of it. Any sites you have in mind?

On http://www.krautchan.net/ you can write with native germans for free.
>>
>>9271925
meet people who are native speakers and watch movies and tv in their language.
