Do you take legitimate issue with this book, or is it just hip to hate on it? I rather enjoyed it.

it's really bad
It's just more popular than it should be. People make Coehlo out to be some sort of genius, and he isn't. It's a really allegory about treasure being at home/inside the whole time.
it's comparable to le petite prince. which is a huge pile of pseudo deep shit.

it's more like I hate the people who like it

I liked it. It's what introduced me to reading, tbqh, one of the first "grown-up" books I've finished as a wee me.
Let me tell you, though. If you wish to alienate people from reading, tell them to start with the greeks. I'm sure they'll love it.

It's worse than trash, because trash has no pretensions.
It's a book that seems to consist almost entirely of "inspirational" quotes that women post on their Facebooks.
Anyone have a pdf of it or something? Want to check it out
My dad made me read this, gave me $50 when i was done
it's fucking awful. feel-good motivational shit, and the writing, the spirit in which the story is told is extremely juvenile. the writer is constantly telling you what the characters feel and what they come to realize, instead of actually showing character feeling and changing. bad, bad writing. but it makes plebs feel good about themselves and like they've just read a "smart people" book so it's hugely popular, more than it should be really.

Im portuguese so the fact that it's a portuguese book doesn't carry any interest or novelty to me so I see it as it is, an 'i'm in highschool but I'm smart and deep' starter pack
