M&D takes place in the 18th c. Times were as vital then but not near so quick as in 20th c post-war Berlin. Humor is therefore raw, less cerebral, more physical. It's the story of two very different guys who find themselves in one another's proximity, because of work, for a very great portion of their adult lives-- and far away from home. It's a wonderful book.

Is it as abstract as GR or more straightforward?

More straight-forward. Still vibrant, but more relaxed. There's alot of heart, ultimately, in this book, and Pynchon doesn't try so much to disguise it as he does in the others. After Against the Day, in the majority of its sections, this may be Pynchon's most- how to say it?- comfy book. After finishing it I wasn't in awe, like after GR or V., but rather sad.
