HOW THE FUCK DO I GET GOOD AT WRITING
>>
>>9262666
Practice and talent.
>>
>>9262666
1. Read every day
2. Write every day
3. Finish things

Repeat ad infinitum

In that case, how do I plagiarize the work of others without getting caught?
>>
>>9262695
>3. Finish things
This.
>>
>>9262701
You have too many sources to plagiarize from that it won't be worth anyone's time looking through them
>>
>>9262666

Read and master 'The Elements of Style'. If you do, your grammar shall be perfect.

You should also read every day. You can also choose to analyse those books you most enjoy; you ask what you like about a scene, and assess what goes into creating the desired effect. Replicate from your results.

Write every day. The more you practice, the better you shall get.

Spend at least three times the amount of hours you spend on writing on rewriting. Rewriting is where great works are made.

Do the things I've mentioned as much as possible. Each day you have the choice to spend your free time on these things or not. It's up to you.

Finally, trust the process. Don't quit.

>>9262695

Dostoevsky gambled for 22 months, then wrote for 1 month

1. Be russian
>>
1. Go out and actually live life for at least 10 years.

2. It's usually advantageous to get a serious substance addiction.

3. write and read.
>>
You won't accept that it's that easy and that hard: read and write.

You won't dumb down.

And that's why you're doomed to failure.
>>
>>9262775
>muh mysterious russian soul
Fuck off.
>>
>>9262798

>>
1. FOR STYLE: COPY THE WHOLE BIBLE - OR SHAKESPEARE, OR JOYCE, OR FAULKNER, OR WHOMEVER - TEN TIMES OVER (DEMOSTHENES COPIED THE WHOLE WORKS OF THUCYDIDES EIGHT TIMES OVER AND IT WORKED. YOU'RE MUCH DUMBER THAN HIM, SO COPY A LARGER WORKER AND DO IT MORE).

Seriously. If you really do that ten times over, you WILL become good no matter what. But you have to do it daily. Do it in three years. Medieval monks spent their whole life copying books down and the number of them who became great philosophers, writers and musicians is absolutely disproportional to the rest of the population.

2. DO SOMETHING. GO OUT. BECOME A GREENPEACE ACTIVIST, A PORNOGRAPHER, A COLLEGE STUDENT. WORK WITH INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM, MURDER CASES. MARRY AND DIVORCE. CONVERT TO ISLAM. FIGHT ISIS. BECOME FRIENDS WITH THE TRUMP KIDS. EXPERIENCE AN AIR CRASH. DO ANYTHING THAT IS UNIQUE AND COULD ONLY HAVE BEEN DONE IN YOUR COUNTRY AND PLACE.

3. APPLY THE STYLE YOUR LEARNED TO THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE ACTIVITIES YOU DID.

Results:

Style + originality + honesty and knowledge about one is talking about = good art.
>>
>>9262782
>actually live life
b-but that's pleb-like
>It's usually advantageous to get a serious substance addiction
what?!
>>
>>9262858

Most writers are, or have been addicts.
>>
>>9262864
You are implying drugs --> writing and not the other way. Why.
Do you honestly believe that Nietzsche's relationship with opium or Pessoa with alcohol helped them write better? Drugs are a consequence, not a cause.
>>
>>9262864
Mostly alcoholics. Getting addicted to a substance is terrible advice, but alcohol is definitely the best substance to get addicted to if you want to be functional. "A drunk man's words are a sober mans thoughts" that's pretty good if you wanna write. Either way you'll always end up being depressed and it's not worth it.
>>
>>9262871
>You are implying drugs --> writing and not the other way. Why.

I didn't imply shit, faggot. Don't make your weird assumptions my problem.

I said most writers are or have been addicts. That was all.
>>
>>9262878
Yes you did, fella. >>9262782 here.
Also, you're too emotionally involved with your posts and it's showing. Control yourself.

Fail to see how I did, bucko.

School me, though, you're obviously a brilliant person and can see my mind. So how do I think whatever dumb shit you think I think?
>>
>>9262924
>It's usually advantageous to get a serious substance addiction
And you want to argue that this advice is not implying that if anon gets a serious substance addiction he will win an advantage as a writer.
I'm done losing my time with you, retard.
>>

To be quite honest I just want to write some fun fantasy stories. I do read a lot of books but I don't seem to be improving at all.

Well....you should be wildly successful then, as a a fantasy writer.

You smell bad or something?

Put down the books and work on your writing. You should do both every day. Read and write.

I named Demosthenes. Didn't you read my post? Much better than DFW and Pynchon (haven't read his oratory by the way, but he was Greek, so he must be).

Also, Hunther Thompson copied Hemingway and Fitzgerald and so on.

Read De Copia, or, 'The Foundations Of The Abundant Style', by Erasmus.
>>
>>9264022

I am not OP, but I certainly will. Thank you for your recommendation. I wasn't sure where to go next after Elements of Style, and this seems a good direction.
>>
>>9262666
stop being so incredibly fucking stupid
>>
>>9262666
Shit idk man I've always been a good writer and I'm constantly improving. I wish I could help.
>>
Literally type out your favourite books word for word and consider each character motive, obstacle, action, every word and their semantics, etc. It doesn't take very long, so start with easy books you love.
>>
The biggest thing that people left out is finding someone who is skilled in writing to look over your work. No one will write something perfect because they're hampered by their own biases. You can't edit something you don't know is wrong.

Dude, chill. Don't think of it as good or bad. I always do better when I realize afterwards that I was not performing as though I was on stage. Can't look at anything I've done and not think it's a piece of shit. But I am my own favorite writer. Especially my early stuff.
>>
No one knows. If it were that simple that you could employ a little trick to do it then everyone would, right? Perhaps it's the physiology of the brain, the amount of neural connections in it and neurotransmitters floating throughout it, or whatever.
>>
>>9267492
Seriously, to write well, you just need to write more. Fanfiction, RPing/roleplaying, short stories, or even just start writing that book you've always wanted to write. Once it's written, edit it. Look for grammatical errors. Not sure if something is grammatically correct or not? Look it up! I found out that that the directions of a compass (north, east, etc.) are not capitalised unless it's going along with a specific location like North American, North Boston, Northern Idaho, or whatever. But if you just say 'it is up north', it is not capitalized, but I always thought it was.

There's also 'Livingroom'. I used to think that the parts of a house were capitalized like Kitchen, Basement, etc. Turns out they're not. Then there's the times of day; morning, afternoon, and evening. Not capitalized. I still capitalize the meals of the day though; Breakfast, Dinner, and Supper. Or I guess Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner for others. I'm still not 100% if those words are supposed to be capitalized or not, but I do it anyways.

Work on description, work on dialogue, work on character development. Someone complains that almost all your dialogue has exclamation marks because maybe you tried to make it sound overly exciting? Go back and fix it, or at least remember not to make that mistake in later work.

tl;dr

Just WRITE! Bonus points if you obsessively try to keep good grammar whether it be for texts or just chatting with a friend or what have you. In the end though, if you want to write better, then WRITE! Write stuff, show it to people, make mistakes, learn from them, and write MORE! Some people say that writing is a craft that you can never master, even if you live so damn long that you're writing until you're over 100 years old, there's always new tricks to learn, new words, new ways to develop a character, new stories to tell, new ways to describe things, etc. So just WRITE!

that's terrible advice

don't read anything, if you do it will taint your own innate style

don't write unless you have something you want to say

first drafts hold the soul of the work

take a break if you're having difficulty
>>
>>9269093
Makes it none the less true, read more as well.
>>
>>9262666
1. Read. Don't force it, don't go only for classic authors, but find those who make you feel the beauty of their work.
2. Do something else. Feed off visual arts, music, movies, etc.
3. Write everyday.
4. Don't write because you want to, but because you need to. You have to feel like writing is the only life you could have, even if that drives you a little crazy.
5. Live. Don't close yourself to life because you're too busy writing about it. Life is the primal source of your art.
6. Work on your creativity. This is the most important point. Creativity is not about being a genius in some specific task. It's about constantly finding new ways of seeing and imagining existence.
