How does /lit/ feel about Nathaniel Hawthorne?
His only worth is by way of Melville

How do you mean, fellow anon?

He's great, but not as great as Melville
maybe the better theorist, but Melville outclassed him by way of writing. I think Hawthorne had a greater reason, whereas Melville had a greater sense.

Why are you comparing him to Melville? I asked what you thought of his writing, not what you thought of Hawthorne in comparison to Melville, you fucking knob.
Fantastic writer. Here's what you do. Keep a journal for a year, writing down what goes on in your day, what you've been thinking about, and so on. Then at the end of the year, compare your journal with Hawthorne's, the shit he didn't even write for publication, and feel like a complete moron.

I read the Scarlet letter a few months ago and it really seemed really stale. The writing went on like an outpour of emotion in the form of an academic essay with, like reading Wordsworth in prose form; just didn't like it. I agree with >>9258598, and respect Hawthorn becuase Melville took inspiration from him and did something enormously better.

Wow these errors, fuck my shit.

Not that guy but: They were contemporaries and Hawthornes correspondence with Melville influenced and informed a lot of Melvilles choices when writing Moby Dick.
