will this book help me become smarter or at the very least enjoy literature more?

It is an overview of the different schools of literary theory, it would give you some new ideas for analysis, but it won't make you smarter and probably won't make you enjoy literature more.

His name alone makes me rage against American propaganda

He's interesting but clearly has a vested interest in telling you how great Marxist lit is and how reading political is the only way to be a good reader. All in all, it's useful but with a caveat.

Whats the point of reading if not for one of those two things?
>tfw too intelligent to fall for the theory meme

Because its fun. There are plenty of other things you can do to "become smart", and if you aren't enjoying literature than you should go and read something you do enjoy. It is astounding to me how many people on lit don't actually enjoy reading.

This soo much, it's such a good read but the blatant Marx shilling is terrible and I hate people that can't read a book just for the enjoyment of reading.
