Most Irish writers are realists. Just the most famous ones are experimental madlads. Edna O'Brien, Roddy Doyle, Sebastien Barry, Colm Tobin. Hell, just google "Irish writers" and if you don't recognise their name they're probably realists.

John McGahern is a really good short story writer. I haven't read any of his novels though, so can't say if they're any good or not
John Banville is worth a read as well
