Because the establishment of a welfare state is part of the Social Democratic Movement which has socialistic tendencies in it's reconciliation of democratic liberalism with socialism more broadly. We're talking about whether socialism has been tried. Whether social democracy is socialist or not is pretty important to that conversation. So is rigour.

I disagree. I think he was trying to make the very familiar argument against communism, that whenever it has been tried, it hasn't turned out well, and was therefore conflating communism with socialism, which is very common in the United States.
btw, are you an American? it would probably clear up this whole argument pretty quick if you aren't
