I'm taking a class on modernism and I've noticed that there are an enormous amount of references to canon works.

I need to get up to scratch on it quick, focusing on narrative works. I'm not aiming at a comprehensive knowledge, just a solid foundation.

So I've started putting together a concise-as-possible reading list based on things most frequency referenced or alluded to. Am I missing anything terribly important? Is there anything I can get rid of?

CLASSICAL CANON
>Theogony? (need a concise overview of Greek mythology)
>Iliad
>Odyssey
>Aeneid

HEBREW CANON
>Genesis
>Exodus
>Numbers + Deuteronomy 31–34
>Joshua
>Judges
>Samuel
>Kings
>Job

CHRISTIAN CANON
>Luke
>Acts
>Revelation

MEME CANON
>Divine Comedy
>Paradise Lost
>Don Quixote
>Hamlet
>>
Nah, that's pretty much all you need. Enjoy, OP.

Pretty good. I'm only really comfortable commenting on ancient (pagan) texts, so I'd say you could drop Theogony if you really wanted, as it's almost like the bible's "Numbers" except for Greece. It has valuable info but probably isn't necessary for the depth you're looking for; many of the gods, their roles, and their personalities as understood by the Greeks will be addressed in Homer. Would recommend Hesiod eventually, though, but not for a crash course.

Otherwise I think it looks good for a barebones canon. Maybe read the other gospels? I've only read Matthew in full and am not sure of each gospel's significance relative to the others, but the writing is great. Might not be worth it for your current intentions, but worth considering.

Thanks for the feedback all :3

Thinkgen of adding Ecclesiastes.

He means I should replace Hamlet with the Complete Works of Shakespeare. I'd be interested in hearing what people consider essential Shakespeare, although I most likely won't add any more.

Thanks! Maybe I should substitute it with Metamorphoses instead of just dropping it altogether? i dunno lol

As for the gospels I chose Luke for consistency since it's written by the same author as Acts. One gospel is enough for a crash course I think!

at least 7 others by Shakespere.
Canterbury Tales.

Maybe Ovid's Met. What about stuff like Faust? Mabinogion, Beowulf, Nibelungenlied, Rubaiyat, Gawain and the Green Knight?

Maybe barking up wrong tree but just thought I'd suggest some.

Complete Shakespeare is required reading for being a human. Ignore the rest of the list to make time if you have to.
>>
You're missing quite a bit. Then again, with the necessary additions it wouldn't be concise anymore.
But honestly you can read the whole bible stop being lazy.
