Hello /lit/ I'm about to publish a 300 page fantasy novel with main character that is less of a hero than normal. (Isn't completely selfless and will kill if he thinks that it will help him gain power/influence.)
Who here has read books with Main Characters like this, and if so, what were they and did you find them entertaining?
Pic related, its a sketch that my artist did for me.
Like an antihero? Raskolnikov is my first thought
Congrats on the book!

oh and i do like antihero/morally ambiguous hero
also congrouts
OP Here, (Not like there's really anyone else lurking around) thanks! I actually did my best to avoid the 'anti-hero' because I felt like an anti-hero is still basically a person that helps people in the end, even if his overall intentions may be bad/selfish. (Take Deadpool for example. Sure, he's an anti-hero, but he still did everything he could to save his GF. My MC would be more of somebody that's purely interested in self-preservation and that's the end of it. At one point he agrees to help instigate a war between three nations in order to save himself.

Corwin in Zelazny's Nine Princes of Amber is selfish af. He also recruits an army knowing most of them are going to die.
The "princes" are Machiavellian princes and this series is fantastic.

That sounds pretty interesting. Did you enjoy the book? My biggest problem with other books of this genre is it can be pretty hard to get toe MC to actually be likeable enough for the reader to want to keep reading while keeping the self interested personality
