bookshelves this tiny genuinely make me a bit sad
>>9245706
yeah but 3 of those books take a short lifetime to read.
>>9245706
It's obviously a joke. Hence the 3 different copies of Art of the Deal and the meme trilogy.
>>9245706
A bookshelf shouldn't be saddening. Does the average person actually have a eldedicated book space?
I think 50% people go through a small phase of reading, where they find something of interest and run with it tirca year before stopping. They end up with perhaps 10 books, an odd few more over the years if they're gifted.
25% of people will have a small collection from school. Of no particular direction, most likely a GCSE biology book, a Hobbit paperback and half a dozen young adult they were encouraged to read in spite of their total lack of merit.
Then the other 25% of people just will not own a book outside of Mary Berry. My grandmothers don't even own that much. God only knows what they do all day.
>>9245670
No, because you'd make fun of me. :(
I just have a bunch of old sword and sorcery novels, and paperbacks of a bunch of sci-fi/fantasy shit.

Comfy shelf anon
Here's mine
>>9247074

>>9250008
Post Office by Bukowski is pretty good
>>9251085
I just started it in German, and am only a couple pages in. Its opening isn't really the same immediate splash of cold water as the first pages of Metamorphosis, the Trial, or some of the stories, but I'm enjoying it a lot. Seems maybe more straightforwardly narrative than his other things? But I really have no idea. I just jumped on in and was kind of intrigued by Kafka setting a story somewhere he has never been.

>>9251276
yeah of that trilogy (factotum, post office, and women) i liked post office the best
>>9259604
I saw the film yes. I've been a fan of Jarmusch for a while and also William Carlos Williams and even Adam Driver to some extent (before Star Wars even), so naturally I had to see it. I kept asking myself the day after I saw it if I liked it or not, and initially I was a little underwhelmed to say the least. I couldn't really point out any explicit problems and kept looking at certain details that I'd distinctly remembered and fell upon one that made it a good movie for me. I mean, the trivial little details that kept flashing through my head and bugging me -- like the twins trope, the black and white obsessed gf, etc. -- finally resolved in recalling the chewed up notebook. I can't recall exactly how this made the film 'good' for me, but it was something about the 'Liebnizian Book' Derrida talks about in some essay or another. Anyway, it was a good movie, especially when that 'ah-ha' moment comes you see why it was done the way it was and presented in the way it was that might initially be off-putting.
>>9259667
For me it really illustrated something about film that discomforts me a little. I'm sure people have already written a lot about this and put it into better words, but its something along the lines of: the experience of the film as a distinct event or experience unconsciously separated from the real-world understanding about its existence and production.
Paterson felt like two (or more) different kinds of movies at once to me, and because I couldn't really wrap my head around why this was done or how it was achieved. You have all this almost romcom-tier normiebait humour with the dog (literally romcom trailer material) that the audience at this outdoor cinema that I saw the movie at kept laughing at, and which was you know, sort of delightful but on reflection seems like such a strange thing to coexist alongside this kind of long, drawn out and intimidating (almost structuralist, as my friend called it) arthouse movie. It was really weird because I can't imagine putting on a Jim Jarmusch weird movie at home and watching that, it feels like such a kind of "new movie playing at the cinema with loads of people" experience. Really makes me wonder what the creative decisions were behind this movie and whether or not someone tried (and failed) to make it more palatable to a wider cinema-going audience.
I think after the film ended everyone felt a bit stupid for having brought their friends along to see it. I didn't dislike the experience of watching it, and I fell into its trance reasonably well, but I felt sort of offended by its existence. The sassy and angry black wife character, a-ha Japanese meme guy and the dog really activated my almonds.

Are the oregairu light novels well translated? More importantly is the writing actually good?
>>9259735
Did you give up early on JR?
>>9259749
Yeah.
>>9259709
I totally felt the same way about all the little details that irked you: the weird rom-com vibe, the stupid dog and especially the Japanese guy. Still, when I think about a film I give the director the benefit of the doubt and take everything in it as intended, even the minute details I find troublesome (and even, my reaction as intention for the audience they have in mind).
But look again at what I said above, there is something to be said of the interplay between writing and how it always necessitates a posited ideal made reality. This film is about a guy named Paterson, living in Paterson, New Jersey and who is a fan of William Carlos Williams who wrote a poem called Paterson: it's also a film about poetry. Aren't the poems Paterson writes just as corny as the rom-com tropes and weird little discomforting nuances here and there? For me I guess, it was the chewed up notebook toward the end that redeemed the movie as a whole, and this wouldn't have stood out as it did without the irksome presentation of the rest of the film.
>>9259790
What country
>>9259771
I hadn't really thought in that way. Usually movies I actually dislike, as opposed to just not appreciating as much, have some kind of drive behind the decisions made that I find off-putting. With Paterson I appreciated the soft-spoken good will behind it, and being an actual attempt at capturing the experience of the "artist" in a very pure, universal, non-archetypical way. Maybe I just don't like the "poetry" Jarmusch was making.

Translation is good enough and the book is readable. The publisher -- Yen Press -- is notorious for putting out bad English editions of LN's, but this isn't the worst, to say the least. As for the writing, it shines when Hikki is giving a monologue, talking, ect. (the reason I enjoyed the anime was his character in the first place), and most of the dialogue is fun to read as well. It does get pretty rough in some places though and, again, I'm not sure if this is due to a lackluster translation or what. But really, I read these things for the story anyway.

I think it makes sense. One of Marx's biggest critiques of capitalism is that its alienating and leaves people feeling emotionally unsatisfied. He thought capitalism was responsible for crushing imagination and emotional literacy and he wished for a society that valued those things. Life shouldn't be about consumption and producing, it should be about leisure and self reflection.
A lot of his predictions didn't bear out and a lot of his ideas don't work when put into practice, but I think he hit the nail on the head with his diagnosis of capitalism's problems.
I think anyone that understands and relates to his ideology must understand themselves and human nature. And I think the kind of people that do that kind of reflection are the same kind of people that are going to see themselves in good poetry.
(I wrote this post with someone talking at me so I hope its coherent)
