Is 22 too old to read Nineteen Eighty-Four? I never read it in high school.I took it out of the library but don't know if it's like reading a YA book.
The writing is way better than a YA novel, but it's almost as heavy-handed with its themes. It's so referenced in popular culture that you probably know all of the interesting terminology. I'd only read it if you already enjoy Orwell. If you want a quicker introduction to him as an author that's also standard high school Animal Farm is decent.

it's not a fucking YA book. read it desu
>>9245180
It's good, and it's short.
There's no reason not to read it.
>>9245180
it could have been a short story and communicated all the same good bits
you are completely fine skipping it
>>9245180
actually nvm at 22 i say go ahead and read it. shouldn't take you very long and you'll probably get at the very least that satisfaction that reading a classic gives you
>>9245180
Don't read it just because of "muh surveillance state" memes.
I read it when I was a retarded high school freshman, before I knew anything about it's meme status, or anything about politics, and I thought it was pretty damn good. But if you're more mature, I'm not sure.
that mustache isn't bushy enough
Yah bro, just put on some Rage Against the Machine, get some fresh bong water, get Bill Hicks ready for your cool down and you'll be set.

>>9245380

>>9245399

>>9245406
An English nigga.
>>9245399
lol
>ingsoc
what?
>>9245434
English socks. Never heard of em?
Was the government in 1984 right wing or left wing? It almost feels like dead-center totalitarianism
I don't understand why anyone thinks Orwell is good, I read Animal Farm when I was in high school and even then I thought it was a childish, ham-fisted allegory with zero charm or insight.
>>9245449
The book always struck me as apolitical. Total control can happen with either wing.
>>9245512
You had to read it in high school
>>9245512
t. commie faggot
I'm 27 and have just picked up Animal Farm and 1984. I expect to read them in a day each. I only recall reading two books at school, both of which at the time I thought were garbage and no doubt would now. I don't even think it's commonplace to read lit in English schools.
>>9245512
This. Same goes for Huxley.
>>9245596
You mean like Orwell himself?
>>9245906
he wrote a book against big government not for it. baka.
>>9245180
Sure if you realize the point is philology not cameras and fake news.
>>9245180
No.
I'm 22 and i just read it.
>>9245180
It's fine, it's better to read it at 67 than to not read it at all.
>>9246491
It seems like a pretty cozy book so far. I feel like you could read most of it in a day.
>>9245180
I didn't start reading until 20, and 1984 was my first book
>>9245449
>>9245588
its about communism
>>9246516
You're right really. It's an accessible and well-paced book. It's very bleak but that's to be expected really. Hope you enjoy it, buddy.
>>9245906
if you can't understand the difference between socialism and communism, maybe starting with orwell is a little too far off for you.
If for no other reason you should read it so you can tell those fucking fascist frogposting scum trump supporters that it wasn't meant to be an instruction manual.
>>9245180
I read that in high school when I was 16 and it was the best book I ever read during the time. I'm glad I got better taste 6 years later.
>>9248457
I just feel like I have to read it because it gets referenced almost daily. I already know the general plot. I find the idea of Goldstein so fascinating.
>>9248986
I'm curious, where did you hear of Goldstein since you didn't read the book? It's been a while since I've read it, but without spoiling the book Goldstein was state enemy of the country Winston Smith resided, which I forgot. Goldstein was the equivalent of Osama Bin Laden in 2001.
>>9249044
People mentioned it on /pol/ a lot.
It's good to read because you can see that Orwell was right when you look at the news media and society.
