Hey /lit/, I have just realized that I've been ignoring a huge portion of literature, short stories. What are some recommended/essential short stories/compilations? The story that got me to realize this is God Sees the Truth, But Waits by Tolstoy, but I'm open to literally anything.

DFW's Oblivion collection is damn good. Also The Depressed Person
Maupassant
Chekhov
Flannery O'Connor
Salinger
Brautigan
Mishima
Borges
The chekhov collection translated by pevear and volokhonsky. All three of David Foster Walkace's collections (Oblivion is mostly longer, more structured pieces; Brief Interviews is very raw and experimental; Girl with Curious Hair is hit and miss imho but the stories with real-life characters - Lyndon B. Johnson, Alex Trebek, David Letterman - are too good to pass up). Just get the entire collected stories of Borges - all his books have outstanding merit and seeing his style and imagery develop is a real treat. Salinger is good, maybe 9 Stories. Hemingway doesn't get enough credit for his short stories.
I also like to just buy collections that feature multiple authors - The Best American Short Stories is a favorite of mine and I have about ten years' worth.
