Are his books worth reading?
Apart from Moby Dick of course
Other than the obvious what's his best book?

Billy budd is goat
His poetry is also damn good

Billy Budd and Bartleby the Scrivener are excellent
I found The Confidence Man boring, repetitive and not worth the slog.
Israel Potter was entertaining, but basically Melville lite. Just something he wrote to pay bills not something with same obsessive brilliance as Moby Dick
what about typee/omoo/mardi?
Damn what a slog Moby Dick was, damn good but what a hard Slog.
The Confidence-Man is his best book.

Typee's good, as is Redburn, not mentioned here, surprisingly. Confidence Man and Mardi are written in a style obnoxious to many. Pierre's fun because its such schlock, so NOT Melville, and yet, and yet it is..

Can you elaborate about Pierre? I'm thinking about starting it. For reference, Moby Dick is my favorite book, and I've read and enjoyed Bartleby, Billy Budd, Benito Cereno, and The Confidence Man.
The confidence man was really good

It's his attempt at a society novel about a rich /lit/ kid and his widowed mother who dresses young and likes for her son to pretend that she's his sister. It's absurd, not even remotely great, but I strangely liked it.
