She eyed him wearily as he entered the shop. She'd been open since nine and not a soul walked in, and where she'd been happily though idly reading one of her new favorite romance novels, in front of the shop window, (facing it, of course, not to encourage peeping eyes to follow along), a man was walking up from his station wagon. He looked slumped under the hood of his jacket, and he kept his face pointed downward, but she knew that he was going to reach for her door.

She sat up and jolted out of her chair, trying to recall if the front door was locked or not, but with a shudder it opened and in came the man.

She'd been hassled before by men in the town. All jokingly, of course, but still it cut her deeper than she let on. She let it be known that the wooing gestures and remarks, like dancing toe-to-toe with her while she tried walking by and the creepy winking and the pet-names, made her uncomfortable, but she didn't want to earn a bad reputation already. Still, there must be something admirable about their persistence, and half of them weren't nearly so bad looking, for small-towners. Giving in, though, reminded her of Shaun Gosell, her first boyfriend, and of her first days in middle school; he "finger-blasted" her on the bus and, barely awake and not wanting to cause a scene in the wee hours, she let him go in with it, even though she wanted to get away from him, and the bus and school. That morning on, and until the end of Christmas vacation, Shaun was her boyfriend, and all of middle school knew it.
