Best book of all

that book just kinda sucks imo.
It's all very basic bildingsroman shit with really nothing insightful sprinkled in. It was of it's time.

Narcissus and Goldmund was a good read too.

The only Hesse I disliked was Beneath the Wheel mainly for the anti-climactic ending

Narcissus und Goldmund is a very enjoyable read. Recommend this to anyone that has already read Steppenwolf, Demian and Siddhartha.

Haven't, after I read Narcissus I started on some other author but I'll get back to Hesse in the summer.

His early work Peter Camenzind has a feel of wanderlust similar to Narcissus and Goldmund, maybe his writing got better later on but it's definitely still worth a read
Thematically Camenzind might be more a tale/journey of Bildung, though, and in any case it's less controversial than his more famous stories
