According to what I looked up, the Montcrieff version of Swann's Way is about 200,000 words while the Lydia Davis version is about 150,000. I know Montcrieff is often called flowery but damn that difference is huge.

I'm beginning to wonder who the fuck gives translations awards, because I see award winning translation and I think, "some motherfucker who speaks both languages is complementing how well this is done," but then I read like 8 translations of the first page of Crime and Punishment and I can hardly tell the fuckin difference aside from word choice, let alone figure what makes one award-winning over another one
