Since the QTDDTOT threadgot deleted, and since I'm seeing a big influx of threads around a specific subject, I'll go ahead and make one myself.
For those people who've read Goethe, have you read him in the original or in translation? Have you read both? Do you recommend a specific translation/copy/edition? Other anons have posted before that part of what makes Goethe so great is his language and that, like Shakespeare, a translation seriously inhibits an appreciation for his poetry.

The Norton definitely has the most cultural currency since it's the undergrad's best friend when it comes to a solid foundation of scholarly supplements, but I've heard the translation's not all that great.

Several anons (I believe, unless they're all the same guy) have recommended the Luke translation in the Oxford World's Classics edition. They didn't say why, but at least it's a recc.
