I know almost nothing about history, highschool history was my last course and that was years ago, forgot most of it. Im having trouble understanding some of the books I am interested in (The Fourth Turning and The Best And The Brightest) are two of them, because I am braindead when it comes to history. Is there like a /lit/ approved series of books where I can learn the basics of American history, but not spend a year on it? Interested in period of the American Revolution to the late 80s.

I know the jist of it, I want to get a feel for each generation though. Like when somebody starts talking about the 1960s, I elicit no emotional feeling at all because I know literally nothing about the 1960s. Couldn't even tell you who were the presidents.

Not really. As the title implies, it only covers the year 1776. Isn't even a good brief history of the revolution

Try Oxford's The Glorious Cause. You can read through it once and be done with it or go through the footnotes and expand from there as much as you want.
