Rhetoric by Aristotle

This question is harder to answer than it should be. If youre just starting out then Aristotle will only confuse you-- Quintillian will be far more helpful (his books on oratory). Otherwise youre pretty much damned to a life of reading poetry and litcrit and getting your rhetoric by hook and crook. There are a few books out there that zero in on figures of speech, one even claiming to be a Guide to Classical Rhetoric-- but it's not.

Would reading Cicero be beneficial?

That's another hard question. Essentially a jurist celebrity who overextended himself, much of what he wrote has the feel of being watered down, which is precisely why he's ideal for beginning Latin students-- he's easy. He can't hurt!
