It's not my fault that he writes ten pages about how the army is changing and rechanging their clothes.

I've been impressed with /lit/ lately. Zola, Stendahl, Lermontov, Balzac, and lots of Proust in the last few months.

No. There have been many great authors after him. You are just to much of a brainlet to understand them.

>implying literature is not peaking with John Green as we speak
Meanwhile in Russian literature:
1. Is cold
2. No longer love my wife
3. I miss my baboushka
4. God is dead, what is life
5. Gulag is hard work
>>9145535
Oh well. I'll bight. Longfellow's unread short novel Kavanaugh (a surprise for anyone who deigns) reminded me, in shape, of Tolstoy's great short Cossacks. Otherwise, it IS fair to have this kind of venetation for Tolstoy (or Dickens who, in some ways, is comparable). I, however, do not-- though freely recognize that the three major novels, and well over half the minor novels are all 'great'--

reddit is that way

10/10
In terms of "body of work," maybe nobody after Tolstoy has been as great. But to say that literature peaked with Tolstoy is to ignore the novels and stories (and plays) as good or better that were written after him.

wtf was anna karenina all about anyway? A girl I know who read it told me it was a tragic story about love and hate.
1. Shakespeare
2. Proust
3. Cervantes
4. Goethe
5. Homer

>>9148742
it's about farming and provincial politics
>>9148767
Swap 2 and 3, and allow Homer to be re-absorbed back into the negative, or rather the contextual, space (where, presumably, God love it, the Vulgate is) and there'd be no need to. Pretty much.

Gogol and Dante.

How much I liked each character:
Levin>Stephan>The Prince>Dolly>Anna>Vronsky>Alexei, can't remember anymore, Laska the doggo was good as well, Tolstoy even gave him some doggy thoughts. Stephan falls in love with every woman he meets but is too good natured not to like, can't really blame Anna for cucking her ugly cold husband (if he was a living person in the 21st century he definitely would have been a 4chan user).
>>9149138
Ah fuck forgot Kitty, definitely marriage material, second nicest character after Levin.
>>9149092
They're all good characters. Part of what makes the book so good is that Tolstoy makes them all incredibly realistic. They all have their bad qualities and their good qualities. E.g. there are parts where you hate Anna for being a slut, then later you sympathise with her. Same with Alexi (Anna's husband) who isn't very charismatic, but has some nice moments.
My favourite character was probably Levin though.
Are Tolstoy's other works just as good as his two greatest works?
Should I go with Resurrection next?
What about these? Any thoughts?
>The Death of Ivan Ilyich
>The Kreutzer Sonata
>Hajid Murat
>The Cossacks
>Family Happiness
>Sevastopol Sketches
I might pick up the Everyman's collection.
>>9145580
That's a complaint someone who has never read Tolstoy would have. He is actually very sparing with his words. Chapters are only 2-3 pages long usually, and a lot usually happens in those 2-3 pages.
>>9149326
Resurrection is just as good as AK and WaP. But then again I fell for the Jesus meme.
