>>

This. Literary tattoos are even worse since it's all just for show and you know for a fact they haven't even read the book and are just a product of brainwashed materialism. Does anyone else find it sad how many people need to carve out an identity for themselves to feel unique?
>>
>>9127391
I originally wanted to get the infinite jest chapter symbol to remind me to work on my goals and not be sucked in by my addictions and waste my life away.

I wasn't interested in showing off my /lit/ knowledge

Why do they trigger you so much? It's literally just decoration. It's not that far off from getting mad at people for wearing clothes.
That being said, the vast majority of tattoos look like shit because the vast majority of people have shit taste.
>>
>>9127432
Nothing triggers the virtuous 4channer more than tattoos and cigarettes.

Remarkable change over the last 10 years
>>
>>9127436
Cigarettes is somewhat understandable, as it's something that has a negative impact on others and the environment, not only the smoker.

tattoos are millennials ways to attempt to prove to the world that they are special and unique.
>>
>>9127463
>made irrelevant by anonymity

Not at all
>>
Unless you were a soldier in combat, a prostitute or a sailor on a particular ship I see no reason for a tattoo.

>>9127471
Virtue signalling is the way for an individual to improve his status in a social group by displaying his conformity to their norms.

I do not identify post >>9127450 as an individual. He may well be a bot.

What reason is there for these people?
Is 'decorative purpose' not a good enough reason to put some ink on your skin?

You can make up whatever definition you want for the "4chan virtue signalling", but his statement is a reasonable one, and his anonymity makes any virtue signalling irrelevant.
>>

/thread
>>
>>9127492
Tattoos have long been a way to establish membership in a group - tribalism. Thus it is not edgy for a soldier to tattoo display as a member of a warrior tribe, it is frankly a human tendency throughout history. Same for the sailor.

prostitutes do it to draw attention. sorry for "virtue signalling"
>>
>>9127495
>his anonymity makes any virtue signalling irrelevant
It's not irrelevant to the constitution of his own idealized self-image that is erected in this virtual community of faggots who need a perceived evil Other ('normies'), and validate each other by continuously engaging in circle jerks about the behavior of the Other.
>>
>>9127486
Was he drunk off his tits and fucked up on xannies at the time?
>>
>>9127501

There are many ways to establish yourself as being part of a group. Tatoos are just disgusting and lack subtlety.
>>

That's how all communities work. Communities are defined in opposition to other communities; they are constituted by an agreement among members of what they are not.

While I mostly agree with your sentiment and find a lot of "meaningful" tattoos really tasteless and cliche, there are still some that I think are cool. An example would be how my mom got tattoos around her breast cancer scars. That being said, I can't see myself getting a tattoo that has any meaning deeper than I think it looks cool.

Tattoos are just so stupid.
How are you "expressing yourself" by having someone else draw someone else's words or images on your body? The only thing you're expressing to me is that you're a bloody idiot.
>>
>>9127633
Please re-read your post and consider whether £100 for a temporary burst of attention and a permanent ink drawing on your body (which you may love at first but grow to dislike, or may even dislike from the get-go, depending on how good the tattoo artist is) is really worth it. Not saying you shouldn't get one if you really want - I'm not as anti-tattoo as many others are - but it should be sincerely thought through, my man.

If you get one, make it one that's worth it. Something that could be tasteful rather than something that's your current flavour of the month craving.

They're not actually your friends unless you will their company, and they yours. If you are "friends" through the virtue of an idea, you're not actually friends. You are friends with the idea of a soldier, and look for the "brother in arms" in every person who is or is not a soldier.

Also, looks like the artist somehow managed to fuck up this simple tattoo. In the book, the white part is a perfect circler, and the black part makes the overall shape oblong

In the tattoo, the entire thing is a circle, and the white part is a sort of ovoid.

And an American Traditional style bear just because I dig bears
Tattoos are a personal thing but I don't think they have to be particularly meaningful so long as they are placed well and are in good taste by a good artist
That said, most people's tattoos suck but that's their decision to ruin their body and not mine

Tattoos are symbolic of a desire, both, to define oneself, and to communicate that identity to others. Moreover, they imply a need for external validation. Perhaps, even a desire to rebel against cultural expectations.

All of these things suggest an adolescent mindset, and, unsurprisingly, the naivety that goes with it.

It is naive because this desire to define one's person and share it with others is done by means of attaching external symbols to the body (often no more than pop-culture references, or other equally meaningless artwork), thereby externalizing identity.

The true person is the one within, and cannot be defined through external symbols. Likewise, a refined soul does not need to attract attention to its interests, experiences, likes, hobbies, intellect, etc., by means of artistic gimmicks on the outer form.

If you have fascinating hobbies, they will bear fruit. If you are intelligent, it will show. If you have wisdom, time will reveal it. If you have lost loved ones, they are not honored by scarring your body with their names/faces/birth-death dates, etc. They will be honored in your achievements (although, in fairness, I realize this last one is simply symptomatic of grief, but that still relates to the larger point of tattoos being indicative of emotional states).

Tattoos are like most everything in modern culture. They are a shortcut - an attempt to impart to the wearer greater beauty, wisdom, or whatever than they actually possess, or than they are confident they possess. In either case, it suggests a deficit.

As for tattooing in past ages, often it had religious and cultural significance. In the first world and EM countries today, that is rarely the case.

If someone I saw had that tattoo . I would say "Hey . That is pretty lit, bro"
(P. S. , Lit is something the youths say to mean good or hip, Correct? I overheard some youths of an Urban extraction use it in my classroom and I thought "Oh, That is rather funny & That lot aren't the type to read, usually ." So I used it here . Please help .)

A Papuan tattoos his skin, his boat, his paddles, in short everything he can lay hands on. He is not a criminal. But the modern man who tattoos himself is either a criminal or a degenerate. There are prisons in which eighty per cent of the inmates show tattoos. The tattooed who are not in prison are latent criminals or degenerate aristocrats. If someone who is tattooed dies at liberty, it means he has died a few years before committing a murder.

The urge to ornament one's face and everything within reach is the start of plastic art. It is the baby talk of painting.

What is natural to a Papuan and a child is a symptom of degeneracy in a modern adult.

Somewhat ironically Russian prisoners and old sailors have the right idea when it comes to tattoos

It shouldn't be just "a pretty picture or saying for the sake of decoration"

tattoos should have meaning, they should represent something in your life, either that you've done or that has happened to you.

If you are the kind of person that gets tattoos, they should tell your story
>>
>>9133543
How Nietzsche lived and how he proposed others should live aren't inherently the same thing. Though getting a tattoo to try to look like more like an ubermensch is a bit dumb.

I have this tattooed on my forearm, just the knife and gonzo name part, so my actual hand makes up the top part.

I tried taking a pic of it and realized just how shitty it actually looks. Really kind of regret getting it, not just because I came to realize how shitty Thompson was other than his 3 good books.

Also hate it because it was shittily done, and its badly colored in. Fun fact: the guy who did it for me was in a wheelchair because he got shot in the spine in a police shootout. He was later killed in another police shootout.

>>

Oh, it matters. Also, that took me next to no effort.

Because I exercise my mind regularly, I was able to crank that out in five minutes with no real struggle. What you don't understand is this is precisely why I'm smarter than the majority of people. While you view thought exercise as a waste of time, I don't mind exercising my brain even to analyze something which is seemingly trivial, for only by serious analysis can you genuinely come to conclusions.

The way most men come to conclusions about these things in animal in nature - they go by instinct and snap judgements.

What's sad is that you're on a board for literary discussion, and in a thread for the symbolic and philosophic analysis of tattoos, but you find it laborious to engage in Socratic dialogue.

I like tattoos, I have tattoos. Literary ones. It's funny how ubiquitously people on 4chan are against tattoos but can't really agree on what's actually wrong with them. To me that says that there is a shared reason they dislike them, it's just not one they can admit to themselves, resulting in a variety of retroactive justifications.
If tattoos make you feel anything strongly negative then perhaps you're taking life too seriously.

You guys are depressing. If disagree with my views, your path is clear. Come up with a counter argument. Instead, you comment on a comment on a shallow comment - as if the act of scoffing were in itself a rebuttal.

You can't be bothered to come up with a logical refutation. Your reality is clear to me - you're too lazy to think.

Why are women so obsessed in marking their body with testicules?

They feel like a very bad idea. It's the kind of thing you'd get because you'd just read a book and were so hyped about it -- and that does not seem safe.

I've gotten hyped by books I now don't like to the same extent. Imagine if I'd gotten a tattoo from them. And I thought about it.

What do you even mean by this? Did you mean me, or the person who carved up their leg?

Interesting true fact: doctors where I am don't consider self harm within reason a concern. It is now classed as normal, unless you do something wild like cut your own foot off. But cutting and burning, that sort of thing? Utterly normal and not even necessarily worth a psychiatric referral.
