Reading. A lot. Like 10 hours a day for people like Dickens, Tolstoy, Hemingway, Twain, Joyce, or Nabokov.
Some other people are genius like Shakespeare, Cervantes, Proust, or Goethe.
Most great writers in my country (Hungary) were autodidacts. They translated the work of great writers before their time.
The only famous anglophone writer I know and did something like this is Hunter S. Thompson, who copied Hemingway to study his style.
