I think Rousseau has some good points about the absurdity of some societal norms, but also think Voltaire has some fair criticisms of Rousseau's overall philosophy that the "natural" state is always superior.

I don't really like the Discourse itself because the structure didn't look too clear to me. But the contents are good, obviously. There's this long footnote on "self-love" and pity, which is essential and interesting.
Actually I think Rousseau's thesis on the sufficience of nature and the impossibility to exactly know how and why the state of nature isn't real, - this thesis is especially interesting if related to authors like Epicurus and to contemporary works on the difference between Paleolithic and Neolithic ages, on the issues of work and nomadism and how hunters-collectors survive, etc.
