lads how do you write a (good) book review?

For a blog post? Just write how you felt about it.

I know that's a cop-out but I'd rather read a genuine opinion made than something that sounds like somebody writing an essay for their lit professor.

I try to aim for around 800 words and usually start with a fact that somebody who hasn't read the book might want to know. Then I move onto plot and theme discussion with references to quotes and/or section of the book that stood out as relevant. One argument per paragraph. 100 words per paragraph.

If it's for something more important then disregard this post forever.

I'd consider what are the core parts of the novel that might be important outside of the text and go from there. For instance, I wrote a post about Snow Crash recently and discussed how it ties in myths from ancient societies into its own futuristic universe thus combining old and new.

If that doesn't help then that 'How To Read a Book' book will probably assist. Good luck.

Well, your knowledge about things is usually the limiting factor.
This includes knowledge about books themselves.
The more you read the more you know what to look for (subconsciously or consciously).

Try to focus first on what's obvious to you.
What do you like, or dislike about the book.
Then be more specific, in chapters, paragraphs, phrases, etc.
What subject in the book catches your eye? what doesn't?
What actions do the characters take, what do you like about those actions? or not like.
Are you familiar with a certain subject? Be it the food, relationships, up to law theory, metaphysics, religion, etc.
Etc., the more experience you have with the subjects you address the better the critique.
Applying the socratic method isn't a bad start, have the discussion with yourself.

Don't try to think in "what does the author try to say here" at first, you can, but a newb mistake is to focus solely on that and to read based on what you think the author wants you to discover exclusively.
You can also directly address faults with the author though. Does it feel preachy? like "he clearly has a personal problem with X thing and it detracts from the story". Or you can even tackle the style "holy shit, this author clearly programmed a thesaurus to run and replace every single instance with a synonym".

It's usually the start, since people are always more eager, and find it easier, to talk about their feelings about things.
Though it can be the endgame too, unless it's pertains to our profession or a practical application, we tend to read things for pleasure.
Anyway, it's pretty open, no need to fret on it too much unless it's for a paper.

I was an avid stoner, literally smoked no less than 5g of weed per day for a period of 3 years (had to go to the hospital for severe pancreatitis), the longest tolerance break I took being 3 days, and I NEVER "fashioned" a bowl out of anything.

-bunch of shit blows up and other guys in the scene get outed as being abusers (one guy literally wrote blog post saying woops I raped in the past, gotta do better!), lots of people defending them but for once they're getting pushback and more mainstream press is picking up on these stories
-then someone Tao Lin dated when he was 25 and they were 15-16 posted a long thing on tumblr talking about how he abused her when they were together and the relationship wasn't right (you can look up the post); Tao eventually copped to emotionally abusing her but tried to act like it was all legal sexually except woops, when he was with them in NY where the age of consent was a year older than they were- all of this is documented in his own words in Richard Yates and he was making jokes back when it came out about how it should be called Statutory Rape- a few days after this gets picked up outside of tumblr/twitter Tao lawyers up with that Visine money or whatever and the person they had dated goes quiet about it
-during this time lots of people who weren't defending the other outted rapists/abusers go quiet or don't outright condemn Tao- including Mira who it turns out had their tweet book deal together
-a year later Mira's doing press with him and as far as I know has never commented on him being at best an adult who dated a young teen and emotionally abused her (what he's admitted multiple times to being)
-Tao paid some company to clean up his google results so now it's not the first thing that happens when you google him, had another book come out, people are back to not caring I guess
-(also htmlgiant closed around this time bc oh no like a third of the guys they've really rode hard for/had working for them had been revealed to be abusers, now they're back not that anyone cares
