Try Outer Dark. McCarthy is from the Harry Caudill school of Appalachia. Which is also the James Dickey school of Appalachia. Which is to say that they all three were from there, so knew that the sister-fucking, baby-eating pig squealing stereotypes are very real.

Heh, it's life, kiddo.

It's the funniest book.

I thought it was funny.
It's a picaresque btw.

You'll still have the same attitude towards once you've finished it if you haven't already.

I still think Harrogate is the funniest character I've ever read.

This is up there, if not my favorite novel, and I actually prefer it to Blood Meridian. I think McCarthy really found his own voice with this one, after years of Faulknerian emulation.

It fuses the connective prose style of Faulkner with modernistic language and the result is like nothing else I've ever read, stylistically speaking.

I'm in the middle of it now and I agree about the style. It isn't as minimal as The Road or No Country and not as Old Testament as Blood Meridian.

I've heard it described as mccarthy's ulysses. He even references it in the book so I'll take it

Black Comedy. I found it to be quite an ode to liberation and how to live with yourself, despite your past and future.

10x better than Blood Meridian

Why not both? Don't be so ambivalent; it doesn't have to be just one genre. There were times when I really sympathized with Suttree for hardships, and there were other times when I cackled from laughing too hard. It's a great read.

Incidentally, I really enjoyed the format of the novel, for it wasn't structured chronologically like most novels are. But it was written almost like an auto-biography, in that each chapter, without being related to the other ones, conveyed Suttree's character and emotions in different scenarios.
