What do you all think of Saul Bellow (wrote the foreward for the book in OP)? He was recommended to me several times and I ended up picking up thr first thing I saw by him in my local bookstore, A Theft. I was sorely disappointed by it. Should I give him another chance and read one of his more well-known works like Adventures of Augie March? Is A Theft fairly representative of his other works?

I've never heard of A Theft, but the general consensus seems to be that it's pretty unremarkable. The only book of his I've read was Herzog and I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to reading more of him.
