Could we discuss this? I enjoyed it. Why was Darl going crazy?

i hated it

I also loved this book when i read it. Darl had schizophrenia as far as my class was concerned. It made the most realistic sense. I dont remember the mom being referred to as a fish though

Vardaman saying "my mother is a fish" was a way of him trying to understand death.
He was a very young boy, too young to understand death, and no one explained it to him. When we first meet Vardaman he caught a catfish as big as him and he's holding it to his chest. Someone tells him to take it to his sister to have it gutted and cleaned. That's his only experience with death, his only frame of reference. So when his mom stopped moving and her body started to smell bad his mind connected it to the fish because nobody explained death to him.
Of course it didn't help that Darl said their brother's mom was a horse.

It was pretty clear that Darl was mentally unwell his whole life and everybody suspected it of him. That's why his dad and brothers kind of took it into stride when he burned the barn down; he didn't "snap", he descended into his insanity.
