Suttree (I think I spelled this wrong, read it a while ago) and Blood Meridian are top tier American fiction. Suttree is a more personal and emotional book while meridian is about ideas.

If you want something lighter go for things like the road or no country for old men, then try the border trilogy

It seemed to me like McCarthy cashing in on an attempt for a movie deal. The whole thing reads like some cheesy b movie script with what could have been an interesting story but the characters are too bland and shallow and he doesn't develop the plot or expand on any of the central ideas at all
