What is /lit's opinion on the school of life?
>>
>>9067797
poop
>>
>>9067798
Do elaborate.
>>
>>9067797
loses its appeal quickly
perspective on life is kind of narrow minded, doesnt take enough vantage points into consideration
assumes alot of things about you as a person
trying to sell their overpriced merchandise
>>
>>9067797
The school of life is a school of captains. There I've learned to drink vodka from glasses. The school of life is a school of men. There I've learned to break it to women.
>>
No substantial school of thought can be distilled into a set of simple moral guidelines.
It's also despicable to try and sell a "philosopher's sweater" to impressionable teens while keeping up the guise of being an institution of learning.
>>
pop philosophy
>>
>>9067906
You sound like someone who's never even watched a school of life video.
>>
>>9067943
You sound like someone very gullible
>>
>>9067797
great to get started or to get a general overview over a certain topic
>>
>>9067943
Can you tell me what it was you didn't agree with?
>>
i don't know shit about the school of life, but i've read quiet a few interesting things on the book of life. i also have read de bottons "the course of love" and it has had a very positive impact on my relationship

i especially like the relationship section they have. it cleans up a lot of unhealthy misconceptions about love a lot of people struggle with
>>
"every philosopher in history was a banal liberal loser like I am and here's why

P.S.: would you like to hear about my thinly veiled sexual anxieties"
>>
>>9067930
This post is the one that most agrees with me abd I hearby declare this thread as finished.
>>
Only seen the philosophy series. I thought it was of the worst kind, not that short introductions aren't fine but from the few clips I watched (been a while desu) I remember how it constantly tried to be all chummy.with normies and made everything seem utterly banal. I am inclined to dislike it and would not recommend it to friends.

came here to post this.
>>
absolute trash. it is to philosophy what john green is to history or joe rogan is to philosophy

>>9068389

>>
No ones sucks out the fun, the grandiosity and the coolness of philosophy quite like Alain The Bottom. I guarantee you you will die a virgin or a cuck if you actually listen to that fag's advice on relationships and sex.
>>
It's a great way to be introduced to the vast number of important thinkers that have lived. The negativity itt is totally undeserved imo. Also de Botton tries to give an as well rounded as possible view on each thinker/topic which is the opposite from the overexcited take someone who just got into that particular subject would deliver and I think that's the reason a lot of people here think he's kinda dry.
>>
>>9067943
You sound like someone who's never even read a book somewhat related to philosophy.
>>
>>9070229
>de Botton
>Well rounded
>>
>>9070229
i neber found him to be "dry". why do people think that? i just think he tries to get the essence from all the sources and mash them together in something you can actually use in your daily life
>>
>>9068414
This is so true. Like that video where he rationalizes pride in being a "nice guy" who has the restraint of not giving in to his sexual urges despite the fact that he's friendzoned either way
>>
>>9067943
I've met that bald headed ass at dinner and I can tell you he's a limpwristed intellectual fairy.

No to mention his video on Kierkegaard was fundamentally a misreading (if you could really allow for a misreading of K).
>>
Pure ideology.

hurr durr life is le bes teacher blahblahblah im so deep and pragmatic polyamory is cool btw
>>
My highschool literature teacher showed a video of his in class. Im not sure if that has anything to with her gender.
>>
Hate it ,garbage that often gives a false pretense regarding a subject or author.Spend most of the time romanticizing over the subject matter with purple prose than actually getting down with it...... Nobody who actually gives two shit about reading or studying watches these video, instead does so to feel like they are reading/studying.

Basically, the NOW THIS of philosophy.

If you are aiming for a introductory rudimentary short yet interesting videos regarding such subjects you might look up eric dodson .

Failures of humanity:
1. Tribalism
2. short term thinking
3. Wishful thinking

Every one of these has been evolutionarily necessary.
Furthermore, if Alan is correct and these are problems of the architecture of the brain how can they be tempered by education and the law?
This is pure anti scientific rhetoric. If we are smart as Alan de bottom assumes, we can analyse our own actions and bootstrap that to base level rationality. Science not philosophical self reflection solves problems.
>>
>>9069758
underrated post.
>>
>>9069758
>grandiosity
Philosophy isn't about grand metaphysical claims, it is about analysing language and applying formal logic to clean up.
>>
opinionated dogshit for pretentious normies

only thing more annoying than the content itself is the narrator
>>
It is good because they get young people asking important questions. :)

It is bad because they try to sell answers to those questions. :(

>>9070686
Hah, I remember that vid. Overrated though
>>
>>9070229
I disagree. It's good-intentioned and I like it in concept but honestly, it's so over-simplified and normie-friendly that it often fails to capture the nuances of what the philosophers were trying to say. It more often than not completely ignores significant parts of their thought in place of others that Alain de Botton happens to like more (A good example of this is his atrocious Comte and Kant videos).

You're much better off just searching up the philosopher you want to learn about and watch a 15-40 minute Youtube video that's a much better encapsulation of their thought

The title perfectly captures the ostentatious spirit of modern philosophy.

And the content perfectly captures its irrelevance.

I watched them, they were alright.

>5 seconds of silence
>the school of life
>the first thing you should know about the school of life, is that, at its heart, it makes youtube videos to help you.
>it was created by alain de botton, an author born in switzerland in 1969, in an effort to help people learn, and to help people let others know that they learn, by buying cool mugs
>there are many different school of life videos that are worth watching, each provinding the same view on many different topics that have people wondering, boiled down to a basic mold
>at its heart, the school of life, when taken as a basic concept, boils down to 1 basic concept at its heart.
>the school of life tells us, no matter what emotion you are feeling, no matter what problem you are dealing with, or how hopeless your endeavors feel, it is all likley the result of your unfulfilled desire to be dominated and degraded sexually by multiple partners.

I'm actually in the process of making a youtube channel centered around philosophy.

Flop philosophy
>>
The whole "if it gets people into something then it's at least worth something" is a bit of a meme but I feel this way about School of Life. While some of the videos are misreadings, others aren't; just like Crash Course it's a mixed bag. It's a bit petulant to heap scorn on a project that tries to do something very difficult (make philosophy more accessible to normies) and doesn't completely fulfil its pretty lofty aim. My sister watched a couple of the videos and started reading a bit of Heidegger, then some Hegel (admittedly an introductory guide to Hegel, but come on, it's fucking Hegel); it improved her philosophical knowledge from very little to "I've actually read a couple of the big guys". Nothing's more annoying on /lit/ than pseuds pretending that they picked up Phenomenology of Spirit or Being and Time and whizzed through them, absorbing it all as seamlessly as a data processor.
>>
>>9072248
Honestly, Crash Course Philosophy is mostly decent. It's well-produced and entertaining, and I think the ideas are more or less fairly represented. However, it's definitely more of a surface level exploration of the ideas. It's not for hardcore study.

His response to a negative review from the new yorker

>"Caleb, you make it sound on your blog that your review is somehow a sane and fair assessment. In my eyes, and all those who have read it with anything like impartiality, it is a review driven by an almost manic desire to bad-mouth and perversely depreciate anything of value. The accusations you level at me are simply extraordinary. I genuinely hope that you will find yourself on the receiving end of such a daft review some time very soon - so that you can grow up and start to take some responsibility for your work as a reviewer. You have now killed my book in the United States, nothing short of that. So that's two years of work down the drain in one miserable 900 word review. You present yourself as 'nice' in this blog (so much talk about your boyfriend, the dog etc). It's only fair for your readers (nice people like Joe Linker and trusting souls like PAB) to get a whiff that the truth may be more complex. I will hate you till the day I die and wish you nothing but ill will in every career move you make. I will be watching with interest and schadenfreude."

This.

It reeks of a pseudo-intellectual air relying more on the means of presentation as 'intellectual' than its actual contents, you can teach a child fancy words and a snooty air but that doesn't calling him an intellectual is like calling a monkey in a tutu ballerina.

If he would just stop his insistence on coming off as intellectual it might be less repulsive and more interesting.
