Language obviously originated as just a system of sounds. Some caveman realised that hitting other cavemen with a club produces the *thump* sound, so he tried to reproduce that sound to tell his comrade cavemen to hit enemy cavemen on a head with clubs. So *thump* became the first, 0.0001 alpha version of the word 'hit' or 'strike'. Since spoken language appeared long before it's written twin, arguably words that can be related to something audible are the most 'real' ones.
