Is there any secret to winning in self publishing? I brought out a novel last week on Amazon and it got zero sales.
did you just write some shit, put it up, and do zero marketing or anything to get the word out?

yep. how much money should I put into marketing to launch a book? I could charge it to a credit card, perhaps.

you shouldn't put any money into it. Do creative shit, get the word out.
whats the book about?

You're relying on word-of-mouth. That will take a long time. Check again in a year.

...especially the comments, which the author joins in to talk about how he marketed it. He's partly shilling whatever marketing company/technique he used, but there's useful stuff there, especially about Facebook advertising.
From the little I saw his books are awful, but I guess that's a long way from being the point.

...also, I keep seeing Facebook adverts about some self-published novel about dealing with depression- I'd guess that generates healthy sales, as there's plenty of likes and comments attached with people talking about their own experiences. A canny marketing move on the author's part, if you interpret it cynically.
Also makes me wonder if Facebook thinks I'm depressed. I guess I don't post much, which Facebook probably thinks is the same thing.

Either naturally build up a following through blogging and shill your shit to your followers or fork over lots and lots of cash to a professional marketing team. It's never a sure thing though.

>people still trying to get famous without the help of any publishing house
You can do it only if you're writing trash like cheap fantasy novels. That's the only way to earn by yourself something in writing books.
If you want to make it in the real world connections are key. If you're a shut-in loser who never went to college there are literally 0 chances for you to become actually famous and well-reviewed by the people you care about.
