he's fucking amazing. beautiful work. the duino elegies are among the best works of literature and of art from the 20th century. The Duino Elegies are really unsurpassed, as far as lyric poetry goes.

He has a lot of other great poems as well. He stayed close to his art his whole life, never compromised on his mission as poet, or what he saw as his mission. He was hugely influential for me.

favorite lines from opening of first elegy:

For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror
which we can just barely endure, and we stand in awe of it
as it coolly disdains to destroy us. Every angel is terrifying.
