What went wrong?

Oprah.

More than that
As in, what caused the apocalypse? Who cares?
Probably a vulcano, maybe Yellowstone or something. Or an asteroide.

As in, why is it so much worse than everything else he's written?
He ran out of ideas. This is essentially his "Sanctuary"

>fifty years of trying to be Faulkner

>fifty years of trying to be Faulkner
That's not even remotely true.

they hint at ash being inhaled, so id guess something like that
>>9045144
i dont think that is a fair assessment. this is a light read, but it isnt worse than what else he has written
I have to read blood meridian for a class can someone tell me if it's good or bad?
>>9045437
Yes.
He forgot that he's not actually above the rules of style and grammar that make writing legible. He also forgot that writing like a pretentious asshole is incredibly transparent to all but the most braindead idiots and makes the reader actively dislike the writer and stop giving a shit about the actual events transpiring in the book itself.

This book is at the very least easier and more traditionally written than Blood Meridian, so long as you don't got a peanut-brain. It's kind of corny but I like it more than I liked Blood Meridian, if anything I would apply your criticism to BM as opposed to The Road.
>>9046160
Did you actually read The Road though
Because its main problem is that he doesn't like YeCarthy and uses simple English with no purple prose at all which makes it ultra fucking dull
