You start to realise that most people who mention it haven't read it, or read it and skimmed the most interesting parts.

Seriously, understanding the Goldstein section talking about how Olligarchical Collectivism exists as a way of preventing the prosperity that industrialization should make inevitable, because the upper and middle class will instinctually preserve scarcity and the class system, even to their own detriment so they can maintain a sense of privilege, all of that is ten times more vital than the hysterics over surveillance most people connect with the book.
