the quintessential "modern" Space Opera might be
> James S.A. Corey
>> The Expanse series
However, honestly, for the real Space Opera Feel, I would recommend different Books, since "The Expanse" is basically the most bland and derivative (albeit: Enjoyable! I really love it!) Series.
First:
> Robert Heinlein "Moon is a Harsh Mistress"
after: (care with the titles, I read them and have them in my bookshelf in german!)
> C.J. Cherryh, "Hard Times",
> C.J. Cherryh, "Hellfire"
> C.J. Cherryh "Downbelow Station"
then
> Joe Haldeman "the Forever War"
then
> that Halo Novel, "the Cole Protocol"
that would be a reasonably Epic Space Opera Feel you get from that runthrough.
However, after that you might not enjoy the Expanse series as much, as its Derivative Nature will really be standing out,
so maybe start with the Expanse:
> James S.A. Corey
> Shortstories first: "Drive", "Gods of Risk", "The Churn"
> Leviathan Wakes
> Calibans War
> Abaddons Gate
> Cibola Burn
> Nemesis Games
> Babylons Ashes
there you go! :) Enjoy!

you kind of forgot Edward Elmer Smith's "Skylark" and "Lensman" series. you know, the guy who invented the term "Space Opera"? that guy.

but the OP asked for MODERN Space Opera,
and the first quintessential MODERN Space Opera would be The Expanse,
which derives many of its Themes in an INSANELY obviously derivative way from the other books I recommended.
I answered the OPs Question for MODERN Space Opera,
and then only amended some older works which would serve him better for said Space Opera.
I did not attempt to,
nor did I claim to,
be compiling a quintessential reading guide to Space Opera.
Such would be Folly, I'd never get done.
The original Foundation trilogy by Asimov is pretty great
Aniara.

fuck off man
that shit is neither written well
nor does it advance the plot at a reasonable pace
nor does it ever reach any really meaningful conclusion
just fuck right off 40kfag

it's hardly space opera, though.
> space battles take place offstage
> no megasuperweapons
> characters stand around talking about boring shit
> two robot reveals. that's all.
