What is the royal road to good writing?
Practice, and sufficient reading.
reading an assload of books - literally just read hundreds of books
and dont have any pretense of being "literary", actually have something to write about
Not OP
I've read and written a lot due to social media addiction. I get that's not what you mean by reading and writing.
Which is exactly it, what constitutes good practice for reading and writing? I'm reminded of when I played chess, you only learn so much from playing, particularly with bad players who are shitting out garbage as quickly as possible.
80% talent and 20% hard work.
Write every single day, whether you feel like it or not. Identify your weak points and try to improve on them.
Read consistently and deliberately. Read closely and pay attention to how the writer uses language.
Learn a foreign language.
Memorize poetry.
Don't forget to go outside every once in a while and interact with people. Try and pay attention to how people act and how they express or do not express their desires.
