Roy Porter - Madness: A Brief History
Andrew Scull - Madness in Civilization: A Cultural History of Insanity, from the Bible to Freud, and from the Madhouse to Modern Medicine

they are useful surveys of the major debates and themes in the history of psychiatric medicine, and should help contextualize those 'counter-cultural' critiques of psychiatry expressed in the works by folks like Laing and Szasz. might be of interest
