About to read this for the first time, its my first lovecraft, what am I in store for?

Disappointment if you're one of those nerds who found out about Lovecraft through video games and metal music.

Just reading it because I'm bored, I've read a little modern fiction but didn't really like anything beside Dave Eggers. I used to reread 1984 but that kind of meme tier now

I really liked A shadow over Innsmouth & At the Mountains of Madness. Haven't read Cthulhu yet but let us know if you enjoy it.

The Colour Out of Space is good too if that collection includes it
I love Lovecraft but Call of Cthulhu is not one of his best despite being his most popular. Lovecraft himself called it "middling."
Read his longer stuff. Read a couple of his short stories. After that stop because almost all of his stories are exactly the same thing over and over. Unless you're in love with his prose, though if you are you might just be crazy.

This. I also enjoyed The Whisperer in the Darkness and Pickman's Model.
Cthulhu is honestly one of his weaker works, but since it was the most iconic, 'nerds' and such lap it up.
>oooh, scary octopus dragon monster
That wasn't even the point of it.

probably for the manga section
Read "Dagon" instead.
I actually live his dream-cycle stories. Lovecraft wasn't the greatest writer but there is something about his style that adds to the overall weirdness.
I've only read Dagon, and it has a strong start and then devolves to shit pretty quickly. I find the writing to be slow, pretentious and anti climactic
