What does /lit/ think of Twenty One Pilots when it comes to their lyricism?
On /mu/ we have widely agreed upon the fact that no other band managed to merge avant-garde with mainstream pop music as well as Twenty One Pilots. Indeed, they do make a great job in appealing to the masses but what makes them so different is their artistic merit -- it remains intact -- and I'm fairly certain that the same entity applies to their lyrics/poetry.

Avant-garde as an art for is generally just counter-culture. Pop music is accepted as the current norm for the general population.
