Thoughts on this fella? What are his essential books? Where do i start with him? Is he accessible for someone new to literature (me)?

I just finished east of Eden, my first Steinbeck.
It is good for beginners, except maybe the length.
Very comfy
Nice but easy to read prose.
A little heavy handed on some things though, imo.

Sure of course he's readable. Of Mice and Men is pretty frequently assigned in middle/high school I think, and is also very good and very short. I don't know how representative it is, I haven't read anything else.
He is as accessible as it gets, no worries there.
The bare minimum would be Of Mice and Men -> The Grapes of Wrath > East of Eden
But he has lots more worth reading. Cannery Row is well liked on /lit/, I recommend reading that too. if you want more after those four you'll have a good idea of where to go next based on what in particular you liked.
a trainhopper gave me Tortilla Flat and it was pretty good. very funny and poignant.
>read Grapes of Wrath
>can't believe how retarded the Okies are
>start rooting for The Man

I'd read Cannery Row before those other three, but I prefer his comfy stuff to his preachy stuff. Log of the Sea of Cortez is a great companion to Cannery Row, actually all of his non-fiction is pretty good.

East of Eden is comfy af, OP.
>read on Rehoboth Beach while drinking
The Long Valley is very comfy.
Cannery Row is a really comfy slice of life
My favorite by him, and one of my favorite books, but it's not one of his essentials.
His essentials are Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden.
