>He was naturally a great lover of all kinds of learning and reading; and Onesicritus informs us that he constantly laid Homer's Iliad, according to the copy corrected by Aristotle, called the casket copy, with his dagger under his pillow, declaring that he esteemed it a perfect portable treasure of all military virtue and knowledge.

So Alexander had a copy of the Iliad annotated/corrected by Aristotle.

What do you think those corrections were?

Checked, what do you think that would go for in auction today?

Probably nothing very interesting. There were lots of versions of the Iliad floating around, Aristarchus lists a couple of dozen iirc. Literary critics would compare them to try to get to the "real" Homer just like literary critics do today. For example in the third line of the first book of the Iliad is it daita or pasi - "feasts for the birds" or "for all the birds"? It doesn't really matter. Those are mostly the sorts of differences you see. They would also obelize lines that were morally questionable, and there would probably be comments explaining some things and old words etc.

Dude, to preserve a book that old naturally is ridiculous. Beyond ridiculous. It'd also be pretty hard to verify it. But if we were to find it, do you know how earthshattering that would be for Western history/culture itself? I'd put it around 750 million at the very least, maybe even around a billion, but really (to be cliched) it would be priceless. There'd be no adequate price for it. It would only have to be a sense of humanity that would accept what must always be a very low price for it so it could be displayed in museums/so scholars could study it. Probably would be the single most expensive artifact in history.

What about the Lance of Longinus and its military applications?
>>

I was speaking about what we've discovered/known in history so far, of course you can come up with HYPOTHETICAL even more expensive artifacts.

But yeah, if that was found, well, shit, my post would sound like being surprised I found a shiny penny on the ground from 20 years ago compared to that.

>you can come up with HYPOTHETICAL even more expensive artifacts

call me pedantic but Alexander's Iliad is also a hypothetical artifact
>>
>>9012384
Yeah, but the question is, how much would it go for in an auction. Dammit dude, if we're assuming a hypothetical we're not assuming it's hypothetical within the hypothetical situation, we're not postmodernists
