The work Tolkien did took a very specific set of circumstances. I don't think anyone is ever again going to have an understanding of what mythology is and why it's interesting as well as the creative power to blend that knowledge into a new mythology and be so wholly dedicated to the project that they see it through to completion.

It's more that the current stream supports something else, unfortunately. If you wrote poetry now as the Romantics did you'd be considered pretentious even if the quality was great.

It's literally Norse mythology with different decorations. Read Beowulf, Eddas and some Sagas - it's more entertaining and actually somewhat relevant IRL.
