are libraries obsolete?
>>
I went to the library yesterday.
>>
>tfw owe £400 in overdue library charges
i'm banned from the library now but libraries are only obsolete if you're a pseudo-intellectual

i frequent a library too, but i rarely use books from there. for me it is just a place i can sit and silently work on something. the physical books there are a decoration to me.
>>
>>8999432
How did you manage that? My library has a maximum fine of £5 per book.
>>
>>8999432
>libraries are only obsolete if you're a pseudo-intellectual
>It literally takes 10 minutes to find just about anything online if you know where to look
>explaining your lack of technical skills with others' faults
>>
>>8999439
My library doesn't.

>>8999452
>It takes 10 minutes to find anything online
Yeah, if you read pleb shit, or entry-level shit.
Also, reading on a device is near impossible for certain books.

obsolete & comfy desu
>>
>>8999453
Also, reading on a device is near impossible for certain books.
..how about devices that read PDF`s?
besides, i´m not sure which indepth and highbrow books you are reading, but nearly everything is able to be found online. Private trackers, open domain, etc. And if not, it sure as hell will be found in any given antiquary for a not too significant amount of money.
>>
>>8999458
PDF's on devices are terrible, what do you mean?
Physical books are obviously superior, but if you lack space to carry then yes, digital obviously has you covered.
I would never choose to read a digital book over a physical one, though.

>In depth and highbrow
>Nearly everything is online
>private trackers, open domain
>any given antiquary
Spare me the bullshit, just admit you're a pleb, for fuck sake, and move on.
>>
i go to the library with my kid every week. he always picks about 5 books for bedtime, a few non-fiction ones with stuff he is interested in and one cd with an audiobook for kids and sometimes a movie too. he loves going to the library and i can browse books in the meantime. win win

they also always have some activities at our local lib, like story afternoon for toddlers.

guess they are obsolete for some adults but kids still love it.
>>
>>8999453
>my library doesn't

That's a silly policy. It just guarantees your never going to see the books again after a while. Though even with the £5 limit I'm waiting on some anon to return The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay which has been overdue since October 2012.
>>
I would frequent mine more often but its pretty small with just 6 tables to sit and its always filled with uni students so its intimidating. I dont understand it tho, there are people who go there 4 days a week +4 hours a day just to study nonstop. Are they retarded or am I too smart?
>>
>>8999471
Reading on devices is just fine, if you're actually interested in reading and not just demonstrating your le cooky intellectual quirkiness. I collect fine books in my library, but constantly use devices for reading, because it's simply much more practical.
>pleb pleb pleb
Just go back to /mu/ or whatever other den of teenage autism you crawled out of.
>>
>>8999424

No, I use my library all the time.
>>
Small ones, yes.

I am an advocate of National and City libraries. They are used far more due to their catalogue and they tend to be far more professional.
>>
>>8999475
I'll take them back eventually, just busy with other things. The staff are mostly university students and old chicks, and they know me there anyway.

>>8999478
>Uni students
>Intimidating
How? They're all borderline retards.
>There are people who go there 4 days a week, +4 hours a day just to study nonstop
This isn't that much time, mate. I know people who study anywhere between 10-20 hours a day. Ming boggling.

>>8999494
You've got it the wrong way around.
Reading a physical book is fine. You don't need a fucking digital library in your pocket at all times, because chances are, you barely fucking read at all anyway.
I think you'll find "le cooky intellectual quirkyness" is associated more so with ebook readers.
I've seen people on the tube watching movies on their Kindle "Ebook reader", how's that work then mate?
>>
>>8999519
>watching a movie on an ereader
Lad, that's a tablet, not an ereader. Why are you attacking ereaders when you've obviously never used one and know nothing of them?
>>
>>8999519
You do not know multiple people who study 20 hours a day regularly
"You don't read, pleb" does not say anything about the superiority of libraries
People using kindles to watch a movie doesn't invalidate their use for reading

I greatly prefer physical books but you sound like an obnoxious cunt
>>
>>8999519
The point of a device is not to have the whole library with you at all times, but to have your reading material of choice at hand without the need to lug around a bulky unwieldy object, which is also fairly easy to damage.
>I've seen people on the internet put cucumbers up their ass
>everyone who has ever bought a cucumber is a pervert
Are you really that retarded or just pretending?

I don't really use my public library, but my university library is indispensable for research. There are plenty of scholarly resources that are simply not available online, despite what some people ITT seem to believe. There exists a system of inter-library loans for physical copies of works that my particular library doesn't carry, which means I have access to practically any book at just about any university in the western world within a week. The only exception here being things like medieval manuscripts, for which it's too risky to ship internationally.

This (again, indispensable) shit aside, librarians are kind and knowledgeable folk who's vocation is to get you access to the information you need. Hell, if you're researching a topic but don't know where to look a reference librarian can easily pad out a huge bibliography for you. Better yet, most are willing to make their jobs easier in the future by teaching you how to do research, something which most undergrads don't actually know how to do until their third or fourth years.

The physical plant of my library is also great as a working environment and as a place to connect with people on campus. There's a cafe inside which provides access to caffeine and food during most of the day. There are upholstered chairs to sit in. It's nice.

Libraries are great. Feel free to call me autistic now.
>>
>>8999536
I've owned a Kindle, you mong. Look it up and you'll find it's you who knows about of them, you dumb cunt.

>>8999540
>you don't know 20 hours a day regularly
Sure I don't, whatever you say!
>You sound like an obnoxious cunt
And? Who fucking cares?

>>8999541
Are you denying that Kindle readers are more likely to be "pseudo intellectuals", than physical book readers?
>>
>>8999562
Extremely defensive, I see, and with a real grown-up vocabulary to boot!

You cannot watch films on ereaders, you can however on tablets.

Have a lovely day!
>>
>>8999562
>judging people based on devices they use
>obsession with "true/pseudo" and intellectualism
Again, you should go back to one of those boards for angry teenagers and come back when your brain is fully developed and you don't suffer from crippling insecurities.
>>
>>8999579
>Implying I said any of that in my post
Nice reading comprehension, bro!
>Obsession
Merely discussing something is obsession now, is it?

You're being silly, mate.

>>8999569
>Defensive
How sensitive are you?
>Grown up vocabulary to boot!
I would genuinely put money on you being an active poster on Reddit.
>>
>>8999593

You're truly a fan of free discussion, and differing opinion, aren't you, dumb cunt?

The human race is obsolete
>>
>>8999424
I don't go to libraries, but i go to my local B&N. I personally like to own the book i read. So i like to frequent a Barnes and Nobles and then purchase it after a while.
>>
>>8999424
They're building a brand new $250 million library in my city.
although from what I've seen it looks more like a community center with a small book rental section
>>
>>8999624
That wasn't me but there you go again, you keep relying on that phrase. What an angsty lad you are!
>>
work at a library full time

the image of a library as a book hub is obsolete and there would not be libraries in America at least if that was the case. our monstrously large collection of dvd's and music is what will keep us alive for the future.
>>
>>8999624
Everything that's worth discussing on topic has been discussed. Your last contribution was "Kindle owners are more likely to be pseudo-intellectuals", which is a statement so utterly stupid and pointless it's not worth even a consideration of being taken seriously. Grow up, get rid of your silly insecurities and read whatever, however you prefer.
>>
>>8999647
>Being a sensitive snowflake
>Detecting angst via a post on an image board
What next? Are you gonna say I'm being offensive?
>>
>>8999649
>Kindle owners are more likely to be pseudo-intellectuals
Am I wrong? I don't think I am, to be honest.
Also, studies have found that readers absorb less on Kindles than physical paper books.

>Utterly stupid
>Grow up
>Insecurities

What?

Anon, your posts really make you seem pretentious. Not trying to insult you (Well, maybe a little), but that's the way you appear
