I just went from reading that to Snow Crash. It's been pretty fitting.

I guess I thought of it as more of a travel-existential novel, though. Language (and its origin and role in culture) play a key role but it's kind of secondary to James' story as a risk-analyst who travels the globe and has problems with his wife and kid. Even the cult-thing with Owen Brademas arrives to a muted conclusion despite you thinking it'll be some massive reveal.

I liked it, though. A sometimes strange and mysterious book with DeLillo being quite subtle about stuff beyond the big metaphors (i.e. James not being able to enter the Acropolis).
