Why is Cthulhu so popular in modern culture while all most if not all of the other characters in Lovecraft's work are unknown?
I've talked to people who know who Cthulhu is and don't know who Lovecraft is.

it's a meme
I think part of it is down to the monster himself. Cthulhu is arguably the easiest to conceptualize of all the Old Ones, and that may be because Lovecraft gives him such a definitive, recognizable shape.
I mean, compare him to Yog-Sothoth. Yog-Sothoth makes Cthulhu look like a retarded toddler. But can you PICTURE Yog-Sothoth? Can you picture Azathoth, or Shub-Niggurath? They're less easy to pin down appeareance-wise than Cthulhu, which I think hurts them.

Because noone has read lovecraft
they probably think cthulhu was a greek god or a hindu god or something
I was introduced to cthulhu as a trope not as a character from a horror story. I have never read lovecraft.

Using the word in its neutral, Dawkins' sense, cthulu is a meme that thrives in this particular zeitgeist, probably for reasons similar to why various forms of apocalypticism are thriving, too.
Also, graphic artists have done some fantastic work developing the cthulu mythos.

You should read The Call of Cthulhu. It's a pretty good short story.

It probably helps that it has it's name as the title of a story, and one of Lovecraft's better stories as well.
